Update for May 1

1 May 2024

Revised Dates For Intersection Closure

The closure of the Avens Way/Copperhead Drive intersection has been extended to June 15, 2024 to allow crews to complete manhole and catch basin work, as well as roadworks, curbing and paving in the intersection. Paving of the intersection is tentatively scheduled for June 11 (weather permitting).

Blasting

Pashco Blasting has tentatively scheduled blasting in the area of the new stormwater pond for Thursday May 2, Friday May 3 and several days the week of May 6. They are planning to blast twice on each of these days with all blasting tentatively scheduled for completion by May 10.

On days that blasting is scheduled, the blast area will be cleared and guarded to ensure no one is in the vicinity of the blast. An airhorn will be sounded in advance of each blast.

While vibration from the blasting is expected to be minimal, residents in the immediate area are encouraged to remove or secure valuables from shelves and walls.

More details (including a “Blasting Frequently Asked Questions” sheet), can be found on the project page.

Environmental Mitigation Measures

In response to questions received, residents are advised that the City of Kamloops has retained a Qualified Environmental Professional for the Copperhead Drive Extension project since inception of the project. A Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) was developed during the preliminary stages of the project and before any physical construction activities commenced. The CEMP outlines Best Management Practices and mitigation measures that are required to be implemented throughout the project to ensure integrity of the surrounding environment is maintained, and adverse impacts to the environment are minimized.

The Qualified Environmental Professional has continuously been involved with the weekly operations providing recommendations and overseeing all aspects of the project construction to ensure environmental compliance is being met. The project team (including technologists, engineers and biologists) are constantly working together to manage the required construction activities, while protecting the surrounding ecosystems flora and fauna, including species at risk in the Pineview Valley community. The Kamloops Naturalists Club has also been consulted regarding species of concern in the project area, and with the project team, have developed ways to protect the surrounding ecosystem.
