Update for May 21

21 May 2024

Crews are currently completing installation of the new sanitary main in the west end of Riverside Park and on Lorne Street between Uji Way and Lansdowne Street. Once this work is complete, landscape restoration in these areas will take place.

Starting Tuesday, May 21, crews will be commencing work in the intersection of Victoria Street and 1st Avenue. This will require the full closure of this intersection for all motorists from Tuesday, May 21, to approximately Monday, May 27. Pedestrian access will be maintained through the intersection and to/from Riverside Park.

The tentative completion date for this phase of the project is June 28. Once complete, Lansdowne Street from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue will be reopened to thru traffic and the detour will be removed from 2nd Avenue and from Seymour Street.

We Appreciate Your Patience

We recognize the impact this project is having, and will have, on businesses, residents and commuters and we are committed to proactive and transparent communication throughout the project.

As the project progresses east on Lansdowne Street towards 7th Avenue, the project team will continue to review the traffic management plans to ensure each aspect is functioning as best it can, with public and crew safety as the top priority.

Throughout the project, all downtown businesses will remain open and accessible. Access maps will be shared to help businesses and customers navigate the area. Additionally, project signage will be posted for motorists as they enter the downtown core for increased awareness.

While traffic impacts and access are top of mind, it’s important to note how critical the infrastructure work is. The purpose of the City Centre Sanitary Upgrades project is to install a larger sanitary main to keep pace with the growth of the downtown and the central/eastern sectors of the city. The sanitary pipe is the primary driver of the project, but the area will also receive a freshly paved road, pavement markings, trees, irrigation, and concrete sidewalk repairs as a result.

The City Centre Sanitary Upgrades project is targeted for completion November 2024.
