Fourth Stage of Lansdowne Trunk Main Project Continues to 500 block

18 September 2024

The next stage of the City Centre Sanitary Upgrades Project is on the horizon and scheduled to begin the week of September 23, 2024.

Stage four will see the 500 block of Lansdowne Street fully closed to traffic for approximately two weeks due to the depth of the pipe in the ground and the narrow width of the corridor. The 5th Avenue intersection will also be closed for approximately two weeks. During that time, Lansdowne Street traffic will be detoured south on 6th Avenue to St. Paul Street, westbound on St. Paul Street to 3rd Avenue, then northbound on 3rd Avenue to Lansdowne Street.

“The 500 block contains the deepest part of the trench work with the pipe sitting at roughly 5 m underground. Typically, sewer service has a depth of about 1.5 m–2 m,” said Matt Kachel, the City’s Infrastructure Delivery Divisional Manager. “For that reason, a full detour is required in this area.”

Once the deep trench work is completed in early October, one traffic lane will reopen along the south side of Lansdowne Street within the 500 block and the 5th Avenue intersection will reopen to traffic in all directions.

As the temporary detour route in stage four will take motorists along 6th Avenue—home of the two-way protected bike lane—the City is reminding residents of the importance of sharing the road responsibly. Cyclists follow the same rules and regulations as motorists. Yield to cyclists as you would to any other vehicle. Use caution when crossing a bike lane to turn right or pull off to the side of the road. Don't drive, stop, or park in a bike lane. Be sure to follow these simple rules to keep cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians safe on the road:

  • Pay attention
  • Maintain a safe distance
  • Keep your eyes and ears open
  • Yield to the right-of-way

Looking ahead, stage five—the final stage of the project—will commence in mid-October and involve the full closure of Lansdowne Street from 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue. Local traffic only access will be given to specific businesses and will be communicated before stage five starts.
