“Not Just Ice”: Library Branch to Join Arena Multiplex in Dufferin

14 July 2025

The City of Kamloops and the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library are excited to announce a creative partnership that incorporates library services into the design of the future arena multiplex as part of the Build Kamloops program by allocating space for a library branch in the new facility in the Dufferin neighbourhood.

This unique collaboration marks a significant step in promoting community connection and making shared use of public infrastructure. By allocating space in the design of the arena multiplex interior, the City is creating room for a library space, offering increased access to all Thompson-Nicola Regional Library resources, including books, digital resources, the “Library of Things,” community passes, and library programs, in an area of the city previously underserved by library facilities.

“This is about more than just making room for a library. It’s about making room for community,” said Build Kamloops Chair Kelly Hall. “Bringing a library into a recreation space demonstrates our commitment to innovation and serving residents in new and meaningful ways, which is what Build Kamloops is all about.”

As an added benefit, the future library location will have access to bookable community rooms within the facility, which will lead to increased usage during daytime hours. This thoughtful shared use of public space offers flexible programming opportunities and helps both partners make the most of shared resources.

The City and the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, which oversees the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library, are thrilled to have solidified this partnership as the project moves into design and validation. Once the facility opens, the arena multiplex will be known for more than hockey and skating. There’s “not just ice” at the arena. It will be a hub for community, gathering, and growing together.

“This new branch will build on the success of the Aberdeen Tiny Library in bringing library services to southwest Kamloops, which is one of the fastest-growing areas of the city,” said Thompson-Nicola Regional District Board Chair Barbara Roden. “The positive response to the Aberdeen Tiny Library, and the number of people using it, shows the need and desire for library services in this area of Kamloops. We are thrilled to add this permanent library, which will benefit a broad range of residents and support accessibility, connection, and lifelong learning, and we appreciate this partnership with the City of Kamloops and Build Kamloops Arena Multiplex.”

The initiative highlights a key foundation of the Build Kamloops program: maximizing the value of new infrastructure through multi-purpose use to build community. It also underscores the City’s commitment to ensuring that all residents—regardless of neighbourhood—can access essential community services.
