First Project Completed Under Build Kamloops as Grand Opening of Kamloops Seniors Community Centre Announced

5 September 2024

The City of Kamloops and the Centre for Seniors Information invite seniors and other interested members of the general public to celebrate the grand opening of the Kamloops Seniors Community Centre.

The Kamloops Seniors Community Centre is the first project completed in the Build Kamloops program. It is a capacity-building initiative that will help to fill gaps and meet immediate needs in our community.

The centre, located at 307–730 Cottonwood Avenue, is leased by the City and operated and managed by the Centre for Seniors Information. The City assumed the lease for the 12,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose space in August 2024.

The Kamloops Seniors Community Centre enhances seniors’ programming currently being offered at Heritage House and other community halls throughout the city, providing opportunities for residents to stay active, healthy, and connected as they age.

Residents identified this type of facility as a top need in our community through the 2019 Recreation Master Plan.

“Almost one-third of Kamloops residents are over 60 years of age, so we are thrilled we can offer more opportunities for continued connection and programming for seniors,” said Linda Stride, the City’s Recreation, Health and Wellness Supervisor.

The Kamloops Seniors Community Centre’s Grand Opening is on Monday, September 9, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

“Everyone is welcome to join us to celebrate the grand opening and to see and learn more about this new space. No registration is required. After a welcome ceremony, we will have light refreshments, tours, and opportunities to learn about programming for seniors. We will also be offering some activities and games to try free of charge.” said Brandi Allen, Executive Director of the Centre for Seniors Information.

Kamloops Seniors Community Centre Grand Opening Schedule:

  • 10:00 am: Formal welcome and ribbon cutting
  • 10:30 am: Refreshments, tours, and programming information
  • 11:00 am: Free yoga class, canasta, crib, and more

The Kamloops Seniors Community Centre will be offering several drop-in programs where seniors can play games, work on puzzles, enjoy coffee and tea, and connect with other seniors. Registration-based programs for activities such as yoga, tai chi, and dance will also be offered. Program schedules are available on the events calendar on the Centre for Seniors Information website.

In addition to programs at the Kamloops Seniors Community Centre, seniors can enjoy the drop-in programming at Heritage House on Thursdays from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm and, new at Columbo Lodge, on Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Other seniors’ recreation, sport, and fitness programs can be found in the City’s Activity Guide. For schedules, visit Kamloops.ca/Recreation.
