The City of Kamloops has a goal to be one of the most accessible cities in Canada and to be a model for other municipalities to follow. Effective September 1, 2023, municipalities are required to develop an accessibility plan and establish an Accessibility Engagement Group, under the Accessible BC Act. In addition to our commitment to diversity and equity-seeking communities, we will ensure that the City of Kamloops meets or exceeds the requirements laid out in the Accessible BC Act by reviewing and updating our existing 2018 Accessibility and Inclusion Plan.
Accessibility aims to reduce any barriers that hinder the full and equal participation of individuals with permanent, temporary, or episodic physical, sensory, mental, intellectual, or cognitive impairments. All residents are entitled to barrier-free activities, whether they are work, play, or other daily tasks. Our objective as an organization is to provide an equal opportunity to acquire the same information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services as a person without a disability in an equally effective and equally integrated manner, with substantially equivalent ease of use.
The new Accessibility Plan will be informed by those impacted by accessibility barriers to help identify and provide solutions to reduce barriers that are found in our day-to-day lives that may be caused by environments, attitudes, practices, policies, information, communications, or technologies, and affected by intersecting forms of discrimination.
Help Inform the Accessibility Plan
The survey and in-person engagement sessions have now concluded. The feedback received will be considered in the final plan, which will be presented to Council this summer.

Residents and caregivers who experience accessibility barriers are encouraged to participate in the Accessibility Plan survey open from April 17 to May 7, 2023. The survey seeks input on the four accessible areas of focus identified within the 2018 Accessibility and Inclusion Plan: services and programs, built environment, transportation, and employment.
City staff will also be available in person at the Tournament Capital Centre 8:30–11:30 am on April 25 and at the Kamloops Regional Farmers’ Market on April 29 and May 3 to provide information on the work being completed to develop the Accessibility Plan and allow residents to complete the survey.
