In Kamloops, there is strong desire and momentum to increase the supply of housing; in particular to provide and preserve attainable housing opportunities for those with low to moderate incomes, including seniors.

On July 25, 2023, Kamloops City Council approved the incorporation of the Kamloops Community Land Trust Foundation, a key step in filling this housing gap. The launch of the Kamloops Community Land Trust Foundation was partially funded through the Demonstrations Initiative, administered by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation under the National Housing Strategy.

The City of Kamloops has now formed its inaugural Board of Directors with a diverse mix of experiences, skills, and backgrounds. The objective of this board is to establish a sustainable operating model, including strategies and policies for acquiring and developing land.

Why a Community Land Trust in Kamloops?

In many cities around the world, housing prices have skyrocketed, making it difficult or impossible for many people to afford a home or rental unit. One solution to preserving attainable housing is the creation of a community land trust as an alternative model of housing development where land is held in trust for the community and cannot be sold at market rates. The community land trust would not be affiliated with any social agencies, nor will it provide supportive housing.

A community land trust can prioritize the long-term housing needs of the community and seek proposals to develop land to meet a specific need. With land costs and large profits removed from the development cost, the result is low-cost, attainable market housing.
