City Seeking Public Input into Vision Zero Strategy

1 February 2022

The City of Kamloops is seeking public input on a strategy to improve safety on Kamloops’ streets and sidewalks. Starting today, residents are invited to contribute to the development of Vision Zero – Kamloops Road Safety Strategy, which will outline goals and measures to achieve a target of zero collisions causing fatalities or serious injuries by 2039.

Vision Zero is a multi-national traffic safety initiative, founded in Sweden in the late 1990s. It’s based on the philosophy that no one should be killed or seriously injured within the road transport system. Ultimately, the main goal of Vision Zero is to achieve zero fatalities or serious injuries on the road. Implementing this strategy is one of the strategic directions from the Kamloops Transportation Master Plan.

The City is gathering input from stakeholders including first responders, ICBC, internal operations, community associations, as well as the public. The project team is seeking stories, lived experiences, and input on traffic safety. This information, along with collision data review, crash analyses, and input from industry partners, will be presented to Council this fall and help form the long-term strategy.

This new strategy will guide everything from road design and traffic speeds, to signalization and sidewalks, while considering operational requirements from all partners, such as emergency vehicle access, snow removal, asphalt integrity, accessibility, school zones, and more.

“Adopting a Vision Zero strategy was a high priority to come out of the Transportation Master Plan,” said Purvez Irani, Transportation Manager. “The public’s input and lived experiences on Kamloops roads is an important perspective on road safety to incorporate when we create the final plan.”

Residents can take a short survey, share stories, or drop pins on a map to show their experiences, as well as view the Vision Zero data analysis on this page.
