The City of Kamloops is looking for feedback from residents of Barnhartvale, Campbell Creek, and Dallas as part of the East Kamloops Watershed Project initiative to gather valuable insights from residents to help shape the area's environmental and water management strategies.
The East Kamloops Watershed survey coincides with the development of the East Kamloops Watershed Master Plan, the latest in drainage master plans being developed by the City of Kamloops. There are 13 drainage basins within our city’s boundaries, and the City has master plans for five of them. This new study will complete the watershed plans for three more drainage basins, aligning with our commitments under the Integrated Stormwater Management Plan.
In previous community engagement surveys, the City has found that information from area residents has been helpful in the planning process to identify and confirm known areas of concern. These areas will then be flagged appropriately and, if necessary, added to the City's Capital Plan for drainage improvement.
The drainage system in Barnhartvale, Dallas, and Campbell Creek has a mix of drainage solutions, including piped systems, gullies, ditches, and on-site infiltration. This system can be imperfect, and it’s important for the City to understand where the locations of concern are, inventory them, and document them in the plan. Information provided through the survey will be incorporated into considerations for next steps for the East Kamloops watershed and stormwater management.
Complete the survey, open now until 3:00 pm on Friday, March 15, 2024, and have the option to enter to win a rain barrel. One prize is available, and a draw will be made on March 22, 2024. The winner will be notified via email shortly after.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
The results of the East Kamloops Watershed Master Plan will assist City staff with long-range planning. It is anticipated that the study will identify risks within the drainage system and propose solutions. The sum of this information will help City staff prioritize potential projects and plan for them within the funding constraints of the existing drainage Capital Plan. Projects would be prioritized to mitigate risks such as loss of property, personal harm, or damage to the environment.
