The City of Kamloops has contracted Extreme Excavating to construct various improvements to Pioneer Park and 7th Avenue.
Throughout construction, pedestrian access will not be impacted, but parkgoers are reminded to obey all signage and traffic control personnel when accessing the area.
As an alternative during construction, dog owners are encouraged to use the River Street Dog Park.
Phase One: March–May 2024
The first phase of the project will begin in mid-March and
will consist of the reconstruction of the Pioneer Park parking lot to include
refurbished asphalt, as well as new parking available for both vehicles and
boat trailers.
Phase One Park Impacts
Phase one will require a full closure of the Pioneer Park parking lot, including the adjacent pathway connected to the parking lot. Access to the park and beach will be permitted from either the Rivers Trail or 7th Avenue via Front Street or Lorne Street. Pioneer Park washroom facilities will be closed during phase one while utility servicing is being completed but will reopen following phase one and remain open for the remainder of the project.
Pedestrian access to the park will not be impacted.
Phase One Resident Impacts
Throughout the construction period, dust control measures will be in place.
There will be an increase in heavy truck traffic in the area due to construction. Exercise caution in the construction zone and obey all traffic control signage.
During construction, heavy equipment and vibratory equipment will be in use; therefore, any fragile items should be packaged or protected from damage due to vibration. There will also be noise disruption due to equipment on site.
Phase Two: September–October 2024
In phase two of the project, Extreme Excavating will perform utility and roadwork along 7th Avenue and the railway crossing.
Phase two will also include the construction of a lit multi-use pathway within Pioneer Park, connecting the Rivers Trail from east to west along the Thompson River, outlined as a desired park modification within the Riverside Park to Pioneer Park Management Plan adopted by City Council in 2015.
Phase Two Park Impacts
Phase two will require the closure of 7th Avenue from Lorne Street to Front Street and from Front Street to the Pioneer Park boat launch. Closure of the boat launch will also be required. The park and upgraded parking lots will be open during phase two, however, access will be detoured through Front Street.
Pedestrian access to the park will not be impacted, however, some areas may be inaccessible during construction of the multi-use pathway.
Phase Two Traffic Impacts
7th Avenue from Lorne Street to Front Street and from Front Street to the Pioneer Park boat launch will be closed during phase two. Closure of the boat launch will also be required. The park and upgraded parking lots will be open during phase two, however, access will be detoured through Front Street.
Phase Two Resident Impacts
Phase two of the project will involve an upgrade to the watermain along 7th Avenue, as well as the replacement of water services
for select properties along that stretch of water main.
