During a recent Closed Council Meeting, Council authorized the removal of the Lansdowne and Seymour Truck Routes from November 15, 2024, to May 15, 2025, for a six-month pilot project.

The intention is to allow the City to gain valuable insight into the impacts of the possible future removal of these truck route designations in the downtown core, outlined as an action within the Downtown Plan (2019). The City will also be carrying out a truck route study to assess the large trucks and dangerous good routes throughout the city.

Although Seymour Street does not convey most of the trucks downtown, the pilot will provide a more holistic trial over the next six months for future consideration of these important transportation decisions.

By The Numbers

Most of the large articulated trucks drive on Lansdowne Street and amount to approximately 150 articulated trucks per weekday, with the other 190 being single-unit vehicles for a total of 340 trucks per weekday. The total daily traffic along Lansdowne Street on a weekday is approximately 13,500 vehicles based on traffic counts conducted in February 2024. The total number of trucks along Seymour Street is less than half of Lansdowne Street, with 150 trucks per weekday, as shown in the graphic below.

Other than rail, trucks provide the most efficient means to move large quantities of goods both locally and provincially (2018 Transportation Master Plan). Truck routes play an important role in Kamloops by connecting arterial and collector roads to move goods and services in the city and surrounding region.

Trucks above 10,900 kg gross vehicle weight include single-unit trucks, such as dump trucks, and articulated trucks, such as tractor trailers and logging trucks, all of which require a special license. Trucks between 5,000 kg and 10,900 kg gross vehicle weight include one-ton pickups, delivery vehicles, and service vehicles. Public service vehicles, including, but not limited to, municipal, transit, and school buses, are exempt from restricted truck routes limiting access to vehicles over a licensed 10,900 kg gross vehicle weight.
