A Virtual Open House, which included informational materials and a live chat with project team members, and an online survey was available from July 9 to 23. Thank you to those who provided feedback. We will use comments shared to prepare the final Housing Needs Assessment.

The feedback summary from this final round of engagement can be viewed here.

Project Background

Similar to many communities in BC, Kamloops is experiencing housing pressures due to changing demographics and market trends. To better understand the current housing climate and identify future housing needs, the City of Kamloops is preparing a comprehensive Housing Needs Assessment.

This assessment will include a review of the existing housing supply in Kamloops across the entire housing continuum, help us learn where gaps or barriers may exist, and identify future housing needs. It will provide important information and data to help us better address and prioritize future housing needs for all residents.

In addition to reviewing existing data sources, the City will be listening to and gathering input from non-profit housing providers, housing and homelessness service providers, local developers and private landlords, persons with lived experience of homelessness, and city residents. This will be done in person, and through this website. Please subscribe to the project to stay informed on opportunities to share your voice.

Would the City entertain the idea of developing the Northwest parking lot of Sahali Mall into a mid or high rise development to increase density in uptown Kamloops near the University?

    SOlsonSteele asked 8 months ago

Thank you for your question! "Support urban densification" is a community value outlined in KAMPLAN, the City's Official Community Plan. KAMPLAN states that the City will encourage multi‑family and mixed‑use development through land assembly or infill development on vacant and underutilized lots in mixed‑use centres and neighbourhood centres to create walkable, vibrant neighbourhoods. This specific property is neither owned by the City, nor zoned for residential development. Should a private entity wish to build on that lot, they would need to go through the rezoning process, which is ultimately decided by City Council.
