Municipal Election Kamloops Vote

The 2022 Municipal Election is just around the corner! City of Kamloops residents will have the opportunity to elect a new Mayor and Council, as well as new School Trustees to represent their community on the School District 73 Board. General voting day is Saturday, October 15, 2022, and there will be 16 voting locations across our community. We will have three advance voting opportunities: Wednesday, October 5; Saturday, October 8; and Wednesday, October 12. Mail ballot voting is also available to all eligible voters this year making it easier than ever for you to cast your vote in this year’s election. Information on how to vote by mail ballot and more topics will be made available over the summer.

  • Inaugural Council Meeting

    The new Kamloops Mayor and City Council will be sworn in at an inaugural Council meeting on Tuesday, November 1, at a special time and location:

    The 2022 General Local Election was Saturday, October 15, 2022, where eligible voters elected:

    • 1 Mayor and 8 Councillors to City Council
    • 5 Trustees to the School District No. 73 Board of Trustees - Area 1

    Official results will be published on October 19, 2022.

    Candidates, the public, and the media are invited to witness the live results broadcast of the 2022 General Local Election in Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm on Saturday, October 15. Seating in Council Chambers is limited however there will be overflow space in the foyer with additional TVs.

    Please note that the parking lot in front of City Hall will be strictly reserved for election workers to facilitate the handing and processing of incoming results.

    There is no need to pre-register to vote as the registration of qualified electors will take place at the time of voting. You will be required to make a declaration that you meet the following requirements:

    • 18 years of age or older on General Voting Day;
    • Canadian citizen;
    • resident of B.C. for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration;
    • resident of Kamloops OR Registered owner of property in the City of Kamloops for at least 30 days
    • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in the election and not otherwise disqualified by law.

    In order to vote, you must bring 2 pieces of ID to prove your identity and residency. One of these pieces of ID must have your signature, and picture ID is not necessary.

    Please note that a combined Drivers License and CareCard/BC Services Card is considered as one single piece of ID.

    Non-resident property electors must also show 2 pieces of ID, and show proof of ownership (tax assessment, certificate of title, transfer papers, etc). If more than 1 owner on title, written consent from a majority of the property owners to allow one owner to vote on everyone’s behalf is required. The consent form is available here.

    The City of Kamloops will be offering a handful of special voting opportunities which will be consistent with those set out in the Local Government Act.   • Mail Ballot Voting is Open

    The opportunity to request a mail ballot package has now closed. Anyone who has previously requested a ballot and has not yet picked it up from City Hall may do so until 4:00 pm on October 14, 2022, and it must be returned via the afterhours drop-box, at City Hall, no later than 8:00 pm on Saturday, October 15.

    Registration for Mail Ballot Voting opens at 9:00 am on September 6, 2022. All voters who wish to vote by mail must complete the form and submit it to the Chief Election Officer. The last opportunity to request a mail ballot is 3:30 pm on Friday, October 14, 2022. Further details on how to submit your mail ballot and timelines for returning your mail ballot to the Chief Election officer are available in the form link. As of October 2, no ballots will be mailed out to voters, they must be picked up from City Hall but can be returned by mail. Only ballots returned to the Chief Election Officer by 8:00 pm on General Voting Day will be counted. Postmarked ballots will not be counted.

  • Nomination Packages Now Available

    The 2022 General Local Election nomination packages for candidates for Kamloops Mayor and Councillors and School District No. 73 School Trustees are now available for downloading at Kamloops.ca/Election or for pickup on a USB drive at City Hall, 7 Victoria Street West, during regular business hours Monday–Friday, excluding statutory holidays. Completed nomination forms are due to the Chief Election Officer or their Deputy by appointment only between Tuesday, August 30, and Friday, September 9, 2022.

    Provincial legislation dictates much of how local elections are run, including all of the rules and processes for nominations and for running campaigns. The City has posted an information page for candidates at Kamloops.ca/Election listing several resources for those who wish to learn more about running for office. Resources include videos, webpages, and guides detailing everything from the role of local elected officials to campaign financing and advertising rules. Learning as much as possible before deciding to run for office will help potential candidates gain a better understanding of the election process as well as the nature of the position they seek to hold.

    The 2022 General Local Election (Mayor, Councillors, and School Trustees) is happening this fall. All eligible voters are encouraged to vote for their new Mayor (one), Councillors (eight), and School Trustees (five).

    WHEN?

    General Voting Day is Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm at 16 locations across the City. You may also vote at any of our Advance Voting Days on:

    • Wednesday, October 5, 2022
    • Saturday, October 8, 2022
    • Wednesday, October 12, 2022

    If none of the above dates work for you, you may also vote by Mail Ballot. For information on requesting a mail ballot, visit www.kamloops.ca/election.

    WHERE?

    There will be 16 Polling Places across the city on General Voting Day on October 15. The complete list is available at the Voting Locations link above. There are two locations over the three dates for Advance Voting Polling, and those places will be:

    • Heritage House, 100 Lorne Street, Downtown Kamloops
    • McArthur Island Sports Centre Lounge, 1665 Island Parkway

    The application period for Election Officials is now closed.

    Get involved! Apply to be an Election Official for the 2022 General Local Election.

    The City will hire approximately 200 people to conduct the election on October 15, 2022, and you could be one of them! Simply print and complete an Election Official Application form available on our website: Kamloops.ca/Election. We require a sample of your handwriting, so the form is not fillable online.
