This is a draft design concept for a key opportunity site with redevelopment potential in the Downtown. The Government Precinct, which is located south of Columbia Street and west of 6th Avenue, is a large provincially-owned site with great redevelopment potential.
On the northern extent, the design concept identifies residential and commercial redevelopment opportunities, including townhouses and low-density multi-family housing to the east of Peterson Creek, with some medium-density multi-family housing (i.e., walk-up apartments), offices, a potential daycare, and community uses to the west.
The Peterson Creek multi-use pathway, which connects Sahali to the Downtown, runs through the site and continues as a greenway along the creek. On the corner of 6th Avenue and Columbia Street, an existing government building may be repurposed to include a café, bakery, small grocer, or other shops to help animate this section of Columbia Street and provide key amenities for local residents. An additional access point has been added at 6th Avenue and Dominion Street to alleviate potential traffic congestion on Columbia Street. The intent for this site is to create a walkable, pedestrian-friendly environment that mixes low- to medium-density family housing with key commercial amenities.
